I first witnessed "email" in 1982. A computer about the size of single wide trailer was hooked to a brief case size box, and the old dial-up phone (with a cord) was set on top of the box and magically connected to the same set-up on the other end. The computers talked to each other over a phone line, and when I was 11 years old, that seemed amazing. I was actually using real email in 1989, a mere 7 years later on a desk top computer that you admittedly had to boot up with a floppy disk, but I could message other students across campus in their dorm room. By 1995, email was universal, everyone had multiple email accounts and people were even chatting on AOL. Fifteen years removed from that I can play Scrabble, surf the web, take photos, and even watch my own TV at home on my iPhone. The world has evolved, and I am amazed at how far we have come...but, WAIT! Something is missing...ummm, maybe email without even having to boot up a computer or a phone...but, how could we possibly make that happen?
Well, luckily there was this device people used awhile back called a fax machine. A company called presto.com has made it possible to connect your email account to a fax machine so your emails automatically print via fax. How lazy or technically inept could anyone possibly be to make this business viable? In looking at the target market on the surface, it has to be the elderly who have never turned on a computer before, and maybe just happened to have a fax machine still around the house from 1995. If they're lucky it might even print in dot matrix.
Check out the home page...at least they know their marketing strategy, but it seems as if it is self-limiting business. I am thinking three year life span at best, which is about 2 years longer than the people who sign up for this. I do love the tech-savvy 40-something daughter who can now "email" her curmudgeony parents who never took the time to learn how to press the "On" button on a laptop.

Great post! What a world we live in now, huh? Now I've heard of these online fax services but I've never heard of a service like this one...does the computer even have to be on or does it just print out when you get an e-mail? For example, would it print out if you get an e-mail when you aren't home and it will be there waiting for you much like regular snail mail? I'm intrigued!
